Bodega Cats in New York City to Receive Veterinary Care
A new proposal in New York City aims to protect bodega cats by removing existing fines for keeping cats in food businesses. The plan includes implementing a certification program and establishing a fund for veterinary bills. This initiative, launched by Dan Rimada, founder of the Instagram page @BodegaCatsofNewYork, seeks to improve the welfare of these beloved yet often neglected animals. The certification program would involve a free online training course for store owners, an online reporting portal, and self-certification with community-triggered spot-checks. Additionally, a $30,000 Bodega Cats Support Fund would be created, partially funded by City Council discretionary funding and annual fees from bodega owners.
